Description
The National Museum of the Morgan Horse posted online images of a “Catalogue of Trotting Stock” published by the farm in 1901, which also includes the same image as shown in the offered print. An 1899 edition of this catalog indicates that the farm covered 360 acres in Rutland County adapted for stock raising and horse breeding. It included a half-mile regulation track and 23 buildings with electric lights and running water. In addition to the horses, Watson raised “imported Normandy and Ayrshire Cattle, flocks of Hampshire Down Sheep and Cheshire White Pigs” and also produced maple syrup. Stallions in service advertised in the catalog included Cyclone, who held a record of 2:30 and Owen Dunsmore. Watson also kept brood mares.
Cole Springstein was an artist in New York State, known for animal, horse, and sporting subjects.
Condition: Generally very good, recently professionally cleaned and deacidified and backed on Japanese paper to restore a few short tears, now with only light remaining toning and wear.
