Description
Arturo Toscanini is considered to be one of the greatest conductors of his era. Known as a perfectionist with a photographic memory, he conveyed his passion for music to audiences over several decades. Born in Italy, he trained as a cellist but switched to conducting at age 19. His distinguished career includes stints as resident conductor at La Scala, Milan (1898-1908), the Metropolitan Opera, New York (1908-1915), Bayreuth (1930-1931), the New York Philharmonic (1926-1936) and the Salzburg Festival (1934-1937). With the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany in the late 1930s, he emigrated to the U.S. where the NBC Symphony Orchestra was founded for him in 1937. He performed regular national radio broadcasts until 1954, when he retired at age 87. These broadcasts made him the first conductor to achieve celebrity via the mass media.
