Judith Learmont
Nantucket Island
Watercolor on stiff card
9 x 10.75 inches, inner border
10.5 x 14 inches, overall with decorative border

A charming and whimsical pictorial map of Nantucket Island, hand-painted by artist Judith Learmont. The map presents the island and surrounding waters with rich visual detail and playful flourishes, including sailboats, whales, and ferry routes. It features key Nantucket landmarks and locales — from Siasconset and Sankaty Head to Madaket and Tuckernuck Island — illustrated with expressive hand-lettering and decorative vignettes. The artist frames the map with delightful border illustrations that evoke the island’s storied maritime and cultural history. Sailors, lighthouse keepers, whalers, bicyclists, and painters animate the edges, adding to the narrative.

Description

A hand-lettered note by Learmont celebrates Nantucket’s transformation from a historic whaling hub to a beloved New England vacation destination, emphasizing its timeless allure:

This beautiful little island once the greatest whaling port of the world, is now a unique New England summer resort. It retains its lovely 17th century homes, its cobblestone, crooked streets and a charming atmosphere which lays its spell on every visitor. A haven for the fun-seeker, a hideaway for the less-pleasure bent, Nantucket has everything to offer them.

This original watercolor is signed by Judith Learmont, and also is inscribed by her on the back with her name, and the date June 20, 1946, with a reference indicating that it was executed when she was a student.  She might have been the illustration artist who later illustrated certain children’s books in the early 1980s: Nifkin by Kathleen Thomas (1983) and Clock Builders Source Book by Fred Rowley (1984).
