Bird’s-eye view of Florence, Italy, showing important buildings and monuments in raised perspective, along with bridges over the Arno River, and simplified renderings of trees to indicate parks and tree-lined roads. City streets, parks, bridges, buildings and piazzas are labeled. Since Florence, with its rich history of Renaissance architecture, has long been a popular destination for tourists, the map was probably marketed to visitors, especially inasmuch as the company that produced it also published guidebooks.

Description

Francesco and Giuseppe Pineider were publishers and stationers in Florence, providing typesetting and lithography. Founded during the second half of the 19th century, they were the leading privately-owned printer of office and personal stationery, and also published tourist guides and illustrations of Florentine monuments. The brothers eventually formed separate companies and concentrated increasingly on stationery products. The company is still in existence under the name Pineider Gallery, with shops around the world.
