$525
A miniature bust of the acclaimed French 18th century philosopher, Francois-Marie Arouet, known by his nom de plume M. de Voltaire. The bust in cast metal with traces of gilding is shown with head and shoulders, with Voltaire wearing a long wig and facing forward, and the name VOLTAIRE incised on a socle, all raised on a fluted classical marble column with square base. Voltaire wrote numerous plays, poems and essays. His most famous and notable works include Lettres Philosophiques (1734) and Candide (1759). The former is considered to be his masterpiece and one of the greatest achievements in Western literature. This charming small rendition of the prolific philosopher would make a handsome display on a shelf or desk as an office or library accoutrement.
Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning, wear and handling. Gilt finish on bust quite worn, but still attractive. Marble stand with scattered small nicks and chips, unobtrusive.
