Description

Miniature architectural model of the Ostankino Tower, a radio and television tower in Moscow, Russia, distinguished by its record-setting height when it was completed in 1967. It is made of chrome-plated metal, raised on a faceted pressed glass base, labeled in Russian,”Moсква — Останкинo” [Moscow — Ostankino]. This sleek Modernist object was presumably created as a souvenir or presentation piece.

The Ostankino Tower is a broadcast transmission tower and large multiprofile communications structure used by numerous television and radio stations as well as satellite TV programs. It was designed by architect Nicolai V. Nikitine and in addition to its practical function, also opened to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution under the Soviet regime. The tower is part of the World Federation of Great Towers, an association of international monuments. At 1772 feet, it was for nine years the tallest self-supporting structure in the world and remains among the tallest today. It is a major landmark, and houses an observatory that attracts about 200,000 tourists a year

Condition: Generally very good with the usual wear, handling, oxidation of metal. Glass base possibly formerly fitted with a light.
