A rare 1950 large pictorial map of Shelter Island, Long Island, by Edith Hawkins Shepherd, of the historic island nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island. It highlights not only beaches, roads, and bays, but also sites of local folklore. For example, the place where Sachem Pogatticut watched the sunset is illustrated in the northern region of the island. The map also showcases significant historical sites, like the Westmoreland Clock Tower and the former Lords’ Shipyards, emphasizing the region’s agricultural and maritime heritage. Even the infamous pirate Captain Kidd is referenced in the upper right corner. Flanking the map are sidebars that illustrate notable historical buildings, adding additional historical richness.
