A pictorial historical map of New York City published by the National City Bank of New York — predecessor to Citibank — as a promotion. The colorful map is mostly in shades of orange and blue, with the five boroughs labeled by titles within orange ribbons. Staten Island is shown in an inset map. Some neighborhoods within the boroughs are identified in yellow ribbons; in Manhattan these include Bowery, Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Bloomingdale (Upper West Side), Yorkville (Upper East Side), Harlem, and Manhattanville (West Harlem). Historical ships in the waterways are also labeled, including H.M.S. Jersey Prison Ship in the East River and Robert Fulton’s Clermont in the Hudson River. A numbered key on the back of the map identifies the 81 locations of The National City Bank of New York as of 1932 that are shown on the map, including the Head Office at 55 Wall Street.

Description

Numerous early historic events and buildings are illustrated in small vignettes such as “Battle of Long Island,” “Clement C. Moore house where ‘Night Before Christmas’ was written,” “Nathan Hale Captured,” and “First L.I. Windmill 1804.” Overall the map is set within a geometric patterned border and decorated with a Mannerist style cartouche in the upper left and with a compass rose.

The National City Bank of New York was founded in 1812 as the City Bank of New York, and later renamed Citibank, which today is the consumer division of financial services multinational Citigroup.
