Hand-colored map of Manhattan, with portions of the opposite shorelines of the East and Harlem Rivers: Blackwell’s Island (present day) and parts of the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn. Geographical information includes existing and proposed streets, railroads, ferries, cemeteries and parks. Wards are numbered and colored. The map also shows former property and lot lines, and the property owners’ names for a few buildings. Depths in the rivers are indicated in fathoms. The map shows Central Park (“843 Acres”) then under construction and five years from completion with the so called old and new reservoirs, and The Ramble.

Description

This long map was originally produced as the folding frontispiece for an edition of Shannon’s Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York, an annual publication that included almanac information and facts about the city’s political organization, history and the progress of public works projects. Other examples of this map are in the collection of the New York Public Library and the Stanford University Libraries.
