A whimsical and entertaining 1974 pictorial map of the Liverpool, England, featuring interesting facts about the lives of the Beatles. This map was part of a promotional package issued by the City of Liverpool — the hometown of the Beatles —  to capitalize on the popularity of one of the most influential and iconic bands in history. The map was published just a few years after the Beatles’ infamous 1970 split. It is printed in mint green and white tones and rendered in the Pop Art psychedelic style of the 1968 animated film, Yellow Submarine.  It has similar aspects to the style of the renowned artist Peter Max, though the artwork for the Yellow Submarine movie and poster were developed by its art director, Heinz Edelmann (1934-2009).

Description

The map includes numerous illustrative references to Yellow Submarine. In the upper right, band members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr are pictured along with the two characters Captain Fred and Nowhere Man, much as they were portrayed on the poster and advertising materials for the film. The map features notable sites associated with the Fab Four including birth places (illustrated with a stork delivering a baby), previous residences, schools they attended, and locations of some of their first performances. The streets of Liverpool are labeled including signposts for Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, also titles of hit Beatles songs that reference them. The Mersey River runs along the east side of the map, illustrated with fish, seagulls, and various boats, including the Yellow Submarine.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning, wear, handling, soft creases. Folds as issued, with the fold lines now fairly flat.
