Double your vacation fun / Rent a ‘Jeep’ Gala

A vibrant, jolly road map advertising the “Jeep Gala” offered by Tropical Motors Rent-A-Car company based in St. Thomas Virgin Islands. The Jeep Gala was an exciting novelty vehicle for vacationers, who could choose their preference of a bright red or cerulean blue. In the upper right portion of the print above the map a red Jeep Gala is shown with its characteristic whimsical red striped roof and upholstered seats. Next to the jeep is the slogan Double your vacation fun / Rent a ‘Jeep’ Gala. In the map, St. Thomas and neighboring islands are colored bright yellow with resorts, roads, estates, and geographic features labeled in black lettering. The downtown area is highlighted in a rusty pink. Paved roads are drawn in red to help the vehicle renters navigate the best route since the Jeep Gala was not equipped with four-wheel drive. The rental company is circled in white with an arrow pointing from the cartouche to the southern part of the island. The Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean serve as the backdrop of the print and are rendered in light blue. Daily rates of $10.80 and weekly rates of $60 are specified. Only 1,000 of the open-bodied models of Jeep Gala were produced from 1959-1964, helping date the map to the early 1960s.
