An unusual Venetian richly carved walnut armchair in the Renaissance taste, loosely based in form on the stern portion of a Venetian gondola boat. It is headed by a scrolled crest carved with the winged lion of St. Mark, the curved elongated arms headed by stylized fierce beast heads. The back splat has a grotesque mask. The curved seat is in an Italianate design, swiveling on a base with four legs ending in scrolled feet.

Description

This chair is the actual prop used in the movie The Patsy, a 1964 American comedy directed by and starring Jerry Lewis and released by Paramount Pictures. The chair was purchased at the auction sale “European Furniture, Paintings and Objects of Art from The Collection of Paramount Pictures” held at Christies, New York, December 16, 1989. It is illustrated in the Christies catalog for the sale and can be seen in use in original publicity photographs for the movie.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light wear from use.
