Description
The title “A Map of Shelter Island (9000 acres)” is written boldly at the bottom center on an image of driftwood. A compass rose is illustrated on the upper left with the tracks of the Long Island Railroad running across it. The print is signed and dated in the matrix in the lower left under the legend. There are two known editions of this map: 1950 and 1966. Several examples of the 1966 map have been located, but we are not aware of any other examples of the 1950 first edition, as offered.
Edith Hawkins Shepherd was an American artist originally from Flushing, Queens, and the daughter of an attorney and concert pianist. She relocated to Shelter Island, Long Island, New York, as an adult. She worked part-time as an artist and full-time at an insurance company.
Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning, wear, handling, soft creases.
