Architectural Element, Pilasters, Oak Columnar, Antique Pair, 19th Century
$800
Pair of Victorian Columnar Wall Pilasters
British or American: 2nd Half 19th Century
Carved stained oak
42.75 inches high, 4.75 inches wide, 2.5 inches deep
$800, the pair
A pair of Victorian wall decorations. Each oak column is cut on the vertical at the center to form a pilaster with a molded cornice above an acanthus-carved capital, a fluted shaft and a half-round base.
A pilaster is a slightly projecting column built into or applied to the face of a wall. Most commonly flattened or rectangular in form, pilasters can, as in the case of the offered pair, also take a half-round form. Originally, this pair was probably incorporated into a wood paneled interior. They could also be incorporated into a contemporary interior design hung on either side of a group of framed prints or a painting.
Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light wear, shrinkage. Some chipped losses to upper molding over capital on one column. Recently professionally repolished.
