Description
A fine English Victorian letterbox in the form of a miniature standing mailbox. The octagonal box is surmounted by an acorn finial on a domed top above a conforming octagonal stepped molded frieze. The front panel (of 8 faceted sides) has an upper section separated by a thin molding, and contains a brass-trimmed rectangular mail slot. The main section has a full front panel door hinged on the left that opens with a key. A brass-trimmed sign holder with an inset paper sign specifying collection times is mounted on the door. The entirety is raised on a plinth base, the full front panel pulling out to reveal a secret storage drawer.
Letterboxes such as these were likely used in a multiple-apartment dwelling, business or hotel lobby, or intended as a novelty box for a large private library. Other English Victorian examples, similar in form, are known, also in oak.
Paper sign: “Collection times Weekdays 10 am & 4 pm Saturday 12 noon Sunday none.”
Condition: Generally very good with the usual light wear and shrinkage. Rich patina. Paper sign replaced.
