German painter, draftsman and printmaker Domenico Quaglio had a love of Gothic buildings, and showed the influence of Romanticism by painting images of medieval castles and hermitages such as this one. The St. Maximus Chapel is embedded in the side of the Fortress of Hohensalzburg, and is named for a Catholic saint who suffered martyrdom in Salzburg. This print is a relatively early example of lithography, developed by Senefelder in Germany.
