An original gouache painting on illustration board of a vivacious female skier. The vividness of the skier’s hooded blue coat, rose colored mittens, flushed cheeks, red lipstick, and bright eyes hold the primary focus. In the background, pale blue, white, and green brush strokes contextualize her at the ski slopes. With skis resting on her shoulders, her golden hair tucked into her hood, and bright smile, she embodies the vigor and joy of skiing. The painting includes borders with the artist’s variously colored test brush strokes. Since the image was likely used as illustration art, these strokes would have been screened out when the art was reproduced in print form. The strokes can be matted out for framing or retained to display the work as working illustration art.

Description

The style and conception of the image recalls illustration art used to promote ski mountains or regions in the early to mid 20th century. Indeed it echoes famous ski resort posters created in the 1930s to 1950s advertising the Alps and other European resorts. The imagery is also found in American ski posters of the same period. For example, a 1939 Dartmouth Winter Carnival poster by Don Lupo features a bright smiling woman and her male friend, similarly, carrying skies over her shoulder.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning, wear, handling expected for illustration art. Margins have artist’s paint color tests, easily matted out for framing.
