Man in the Moon Plaque
20th Century
Wood, carved, hand-painted
9.75 inches diameter

A wall plaque of a whimsical winking man in the moon face. It is hand painted in tones of yellow and orange, with red lips and a green eye.

A face of a winking man in the moon has been a popular image in art and decorative arts since at least the mid 19th century, particularly in the Victorian and Art Nouveau periods as a symbol of nighttime. The Man in the Moon frequently has appeared in advertisements, including soups, tooth polish, fruit, etc. Extant plaques as promotions for cigar manufacturers resembling the offered plaque are known though they generally depict the moon smoking a cigar.

Condition: Generally very good with light toning, wear, handling. Few abrasions professionally restored.
