The Sailor’s Guide is a vibrantly colored, two-sided rotating circular chart volvelle, designed for nautical reference and copyrighted in 1942 by by J.K. Cheesman. The front features a compass rose bordered by storm signal flags, with a central wheel that reveals details about different sailing ships—such as mast types, rigging, and classification. The ship class slot allows for setting for Barkentine / Full Rigged Ship / Catboat / Knockabout / Sloop / Yawl / Schooner / Brig / Brigantine / Bark. It also displays directional indicators and sailor’s knots associated with each vessel thereby providing visual cues for ship identification and weather warnings. The back, printed in bold red and black shows shipboard watch times, bell signals, and how to report sightings using relative bearings. A labeled sailboat diagram helps identify various parts of a rig, from jib to boom. This side serves as a practical guide for communication and navigation at sea.

Description

Another example of the Sailor’s Guide is in the collection at Yale University donated by Jessica Helfand, a graduate of the Yale School of Art Graphic Design Program (MFA ’89) and expert on visual culture. She collected hundreds of different volvelles on various subjects and donated the collection to the Yale Arts Library.

Volvelles like the offered Sailor’s Guide are compact, interactive tools in the form of layered concentric circular cards that turn separately by hand to show various information in cut out portions. They are used to organize and display complex information. Historically applied in fields from astronomy to fashion, they provide an efficient, hands-on way to access technical data. The Sailor’s Guide, for example, provides quick, reliable references.

Condition:  Generally very good with the usual overall light toning, handling, wear.
