Slate Globe
13.25-Inch Slate Globe
English or Continental: Early 20th Century
Globe covered with slating material on wooden base
21 inches high, 8.25 inch diameter base
$2,400

A slated globe with red latitude and longitude lines, the sphere covered as issued with black slating material. The globe is in a calibrated half meridian and raised on a simple wooden stand with cylindrical stem and round base.

Globes coated with slating material were produced from the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century as aids for the study of geography, astronomy, and geometry. Students practiced drawing maps as in a terrestrial globe, or constellations and star formations as in a celestial globe, in chalk on the surface. In this example they were guided by lines of latitude and longitude. Such globes were also used as aids in navigation.

Condition: Generally, very good, with light overall wear, minor abrasions.
