Description

These highly decorative engravings feature monumental ornate vases and sculptural ornaments in garden settings, also showing landscape views, architectural compositions and topiaries. The ornaments were designed by Simon Schijnvoet and engraved by his family member Jacobus. These plates were the second suite after the elder Schijnvoet’s designs that the pair produced. The first contained 30 plates that focused on garden monuments, obelisks and pyramids and was titled Voorbeelden der Lusthof-Cieraaden, zynde Piramiden, Eerzuylen en andere Bywerken (1704); it also included engravings by Jan Goeree (1670-1731).

Simon Schijnvoet (sometimes spelled Schynvoet or Schynvoot) was a Dutch master builder, designer, architect, horticulturist, poet and collector. Jacobus Schijnvoet (sometimes called Jacob) was a draftsman and engraver, active from about 1700 to 1733. While most sources state he was Simon’s son, he may have been his brother (Bénézit). Jacobus worked in both Amsterdam and London, and engraved landscapes and views of manors after his own drawings in a style recalling that of John Kip.
