A fine lithograph presenting a radiant bird’s-eye panoramic view of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo, a hilltop to the south of the Arno River. As indicated in the title, the castellated Tower of San Niccolò — once part of a 14th-century gate or porta within the defensive walls of the city — is shown prominently in the foreground. The image captures the winding river Arno with five bridges in view including the Ponte Vecchio. Important sites include the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery, the Basilica of Santa Croce, and the Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo). In the foreground by the Tower of San Niccolò, birds fly over trees, two gentlemen lean over a viewpoint, boats float downstream, and wisps of smoke rise from chimneys. Overall, this panorama captures the historic Florentine skyline and the Tuscan hills in their natural beauty.

Description

Adolphe Rouargue was a painter,  etcher and litstudied under David d’Angers and Alexandre Colin and subsequently worked in partnership with his brother Emile Rouargue. From 1831 to 1870, he was regularly featured in the Paris Salon, showcasing a variety of his watercolors, including marine scenes and views of Brittany, Normandy, Venice, and Florence. Some examples of Rouargue’s work are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of their distinguished collection of drawings and prints.

Isidore Laurent Deroy was a distinguished French painter and lithographer renowned for his meticulous depictions of views and historical sites. A lifelong Parisian, Deroy was a student of Louis-François Cassas and Fèlix. His prolific career spanned several decades, with regular exhibitions at the Salon from 1822 to 1866. Deroy’s extensive body of work, including lithographs, drawings, and paintings, is preserved in prestigious institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and numerous French museums. His legacy continued through his sons, Emile Deroy and Auguste-Victor Deroy, who both became accomplished artists in their own right.
