Interesting and entertaining rare, early, pictorial book on automobile safety. It contains 61 photographic illustrations and associated text of safety tips for driving, at a time when there were few standards. The work is subtitled “Knowledge, Concentration, Humaneness, Science, Caution, Application. Driving an automobile from the mental standpoint.”

Description

The book includes a portrait of the author, Joseph Grondahl, President of the Safety First League, and a pioneer in the field of national public education on automobile safety. Numerous testimonials to Grondahl are included in the book, together with interesting trivia, such as photographic illustrations of Grondahl’s driver’s licenses issued by the City of Chicago in 1904 and 1905. The text, illustrations, etc. reveal Grondahl to have been an interesting character.

The book is inscribed on the inside cover in fancy script by the author: “Philadelphia, February 27, 1925. To my friend Mr. Charles Howard Norton. Yours Sincerely, Joseph Grondahl, Author.”

Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning, wear, handling. Portrait plate of Grondahl loose, probably as issued.
