Manual and problem book for Joslin’s New Solar Telluric Globe. This device is comprised of a Joslin 6-inch globe in meridian (“day circle”) revolving with arrow pointer on a pierced cast iron stand with paper calendar and zodiac, and having central brass ball representing the sun. This was a popular model for Joslin, produced in relatively large numbers in the second half of the 19th century.
The introduction of the manual explains the need and utility for the Solar Telluric Globe, emphasizing that it is both “a model of the earth and sun, showing their motions, and illustrating the relations which each sustains to the other.” The frontispage opposite the title has a woodcut illustration of the globe. Part I of the manual describes each part of the Solar Telluric Globe and its significance in using the device. Part II consists of a series of astronomy and geography problems for students to solve using the device.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall toning and wear. Some light soiling and staining to covers.
