In the fifties, Replogle issued three different tin toy globes with geographical games, each with a spinning pointer on its base. They focused on aviation and the space race, as well as knowledge of world geography. Blast-Off, the “space game of fact and fantasy,” came out in 1953. More an illustrated spherical representation of the solar system than a conventional globe, it shows the sun at the top, while the nine planets and the stars encircle the sphere. Other illustrations include classical figures, astronauts, spaceships, and a radio tower. The domed round base, numbered 1 to 9, contained a spinning rocket-form arrow for advancing along multicolored paths between the planets from Mercury to distant Pluto. The players followed their progress by moving colored metal rockets that stick to the globe with magnets.
