Amusing original caricature drawings of famous men of the Broadway stage of the 1920s during their participation in the Globe Theatre Cup at Salisbury Country Club, Long Island, New York. It was executed for the New York Evening World, and presumably was published in that newspaper. The drawing captures a carefree moment before the stock market crash of 1929 forced the closures of both the Globe and the Salisbury Country Club.
Among those depicted is the owner of the Globe Theatre, Charles Dillingham (1868-1934), a major theatrical producer on Broadway whose credits included No, No Nanette (1925). The other golfers connected to theater at the time are character actor Leo Carrillo (1880-1961); Paul Lannin, a lyricist and composer for musical theater; actors Clifford Brooke (1873-1951) and Otto Kruger (1885-1974); Herbert Corthell (1875-1947), an actor in plays and musicals; British pianist and composer Cyril Scott (1879-1970); Frank Crumit (1889-1943), a singer, songwriter and radio personality. Also shown are William Kent, Hal Forde (1877-1955), Eugene Revere and Oscar Shaw (1887-1967), all performers in musical theater. Many of the actors went on launch film careers with the rise of “talking pictures” in the Thirties and have lengthy movie resumes, especially Carrillo, Brooke, Kruger and Corthell.
The Salisbury Country Club catered to the posh set during the 1920s. Located on Long Island’s North Shore, the club had five 18-hole golf courses and hosted important tournaments in its heyday including the 1926 PGA Championship. However, when the Depression hit, the owners could no longer pay the tax bill, and Nassau County took over the property, which is now the site of Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Park in the town of East Meadow. Three of the original golf courses remain in use.
Each of the caricatures is identified with a brief caption, transcribed below:
