Painting of a ship named Viking of N.Y. approaching Nuku Hiva Island, one of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. The ship is viewed from the point of view of someone standing on the shore beneath a palm tree. According to inscriptions on the front and back of the painting, the artist recreated the scene from his imagination, working from photos of the ship along with photos by the ornithologist R.H. Beck, who is known to have visited the South Pacific to collect specimens for the American Museum of Natural History in 1926.
Painted inscription lower right: “Bradley J. Prohaska from H.R. Lowd 1939”
Pencil inscription stretcher verso, upper left: “Made from a series of Photos by R.H. Beck and snapshots of ‘Viking’ and some knowledge of Tropic colors.”
Pencil inscription stretcher verso, upper right: “Brad -- As years pass I trust this will prove a pleasant reminder of your trip and visit to this Port and others in the South Seas – Harry R. Lowd 1938.”
