Watercolor painting of a yacht named "Fanna" at sea, the scene bordered by a hand-painted red and gold border imitating a mitred picture frame. This is an early work by Joe S. Selby, only around 22 years old at the time, who went on to become known for his portraits of ships and yachts.
Joe S. Selby was an American painter working in watercolors and oils. An African-American born in Mobile, Alabama, he spent most of his life in Miami, Florida. He lost his leg in a shipboard accident while working as a deck hand at age 12, but retained a lifelong love of the sea and boating. Selby is best known for his maritime subjects, and depicted the ships and yachts that docked in Miami from the 1910s until he died.
