A large ship (possibly Portuguese) fires upon approaching sea monsters -- to the left, a two-headed dragon-like creature with spiky crests (or a pair of such creatures), to the right, an enormous fish-like creature spouting two tremendous plumes of water from a pair of blowholes atop its head. Puffs of smoke rise from cannons on either side of the ship as a barrel drifts away on the right. The ship bears a coat of arms at its aft, as well as a large flag portraying a man's arm holding a sword. The rudder, rear cannons, aft and flag are each labeled with a letter. The sea is rippled with the movements of the monsters and boat, and the ship is viewed from a dead-on vantage point that makes it appear small placed squarely in the center of an otherwise empty sea, with no people in sight, as ominous clouds filling the distant sky. The net effect is to emphasize the bravery of the unseen crew, taking on the mighty forces of nature from within their narrow vessel.
