Painting of the yacht Gipsy Moth IV arriving as Sir Francis Chichester completes his solo round the world voyage in 1966, sailing into Greenwich on the Thames River. In August 1966 Francis Chichester (1901-1972) set out from Plymouth in the United Kingdom in an attempt to beat the round-the-world record for a clipper ship voyage. Chichester achieved a number of speed and endurance records, and upon completing this voyage, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

Chichester was an adventurer who left his native England for New Zealand, where he established a successful forestry and air transport business enabling him to finance his maritime exploits.
