Label verso identifying the people in the painting.
Caricature group portrait in a gilt wood frame of the wealthy patrons of the horses races at the Clairefontaine in 1964, together with jockeys and the horse veterinarian. A crowd mills about while the horses are exercised.
The Hippodrome de Deauville-Clairefontaine was built in the Normandy region of France, near Deauville, in 1928, and around 1958 came into its own as a venue for steeplechase races. It is still in operation and hosts both steeplechase, obstacle, hedge and trotting races, including the Grand Prix de Clairefontaine.
A label on the back of the picture with title and date identifies the picture as No. 11, with subjects as follows: "MM. Cl. Ferdinand-Dreyfus, W. Clout, Pierre Mercier, Maurice Bernardet et Fernand Bernard, le jockey M. Giovannelli, Mme Andre Mariotti, M. Richard Carver Jr., le jockey J. Carver, MM. Claude Roger Cartier, Rene Defosse et D. Sartini, Mme. Rene Defosse, MM. A.A. Cartir, Done et L. Chataignoux, S. Exc. De Castello Clark, le Comte Roger de Chambure, M. Domino Perea, M. le Veterinaire Garcin."
W. Sisk was a high society artist who did many such paintings of horse races and polo matches at Deauville in France. Two of his paintings were sold in the collection of Jack Warner (founder of Warner Bros.) at Christies, New York, in the 1980s.
