Attractive hand colored lithograph of a New England farm in the midst of winter, by George H. Durrie. Picturesque scene includes farmers and farm animals, the snow-covered farm house and stables, and an approaching traveler with a horse and sleigh in tow.
Durrie was known for his appealing paintings of farm scenes. Snow scenes such as this one were his specialty and he is credited with introducing the genre to American art. Expanses of snow proved to be an effective device for isolating the details of farm structures, animals and people while serving as a unifying element in the composition. Durrie also skillfully captured the soft gradations of wintry skies. These scenes proved popular with the American public and many were reproduced as prints by Currier & Ives.
Durrie spent most of his life in New Haven, Connecticut. His paintings are in the collections of museums such as the National Gallery of Art and the National Museum of American Art.
