Two Forties fashion designs. One is a yellow suit with a long slim skirt and a short jacket decorated with daisies at the neck, worn over a white blouse and accessorized by a broadbrimmed white hat. The other is a white-spotted black blouse and matching long coat with white lapels, worn over a short white skirt and accessorized with a close-fitting white hat. In the 1940s, wartime shortages of fabric led to shorter hemlines and simple, boxy silhouettes. After the war, women were ready for a more feminine, flowing style and French fashion designer Christian Dior introduced "the New Look," featuring longer hemlines and the lavish use of yards of fabric. Johns' designs exemplify these trends.
According to the previous owner of these drawings, Johns was an American designer active in Rome in the 1940s.
