A photographic group portrait of attendees at the New York State Bankers' Association annual meeting in July 1895 at Saratoga Springs, New York, the year after the founding of the organization. The men are standing and seated in front of an impressive building façade.
The New York State Bankers' Association (NYBA) was founded in 1894 to provide legislative and regulatory services to the state's banking industry. Today, it represents community, regional and money center commercial banks, and also offers educational programs, public relations and other services to its members.
The mount of the photograph is inscribed “Gilman, Photographer.” A photographer named John G. Gilman, of Canajoharie, New York, took several photographs of Ulysses S. Grant at his cottage in the Adirondacks during the last months of Grant's life in 1885 and returned to photograph the home after Grant's death. These images were published as "Gilman's Series of Grant Views Taken at Mt. McGregor" and widely reproduced. Given the relatively close time frame of the Bankers Association photograph offered here, and the proximity of Canajoharie to Saratoga Springs, it is plausible that John G. Gilman was the photographer.
