Watercolor depicting a pair of ivory billed woodpeckers colored in hues of purple and yellow. The birds are depicted on opposite sides of the branch, the top bird having more pronounced color, its feathers black with a white streak down each side of its body, and featuring a crown of red feathers. The other bird is identical in species, but muted in color to give a feeling of depth to the image. The painting is done on artist's board, the texture of which is skillfully employed to add dimension to the work.

Dedicated on verso: "To Walter on his birthday Sept 22 51 Best Wishes [signed] John McPhee."
