Guerin-Meneville was a natural history scientist, specializing in entomology. He also published several volumes of his Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History, eclectic sets of prints in the spirit of the 19th century Collector's Cabinets in their wide-ranging investigations of natural phenomena and interest in exotic or unusual species. The volumes are an eclectic collection of gracefully drawn images of birds, fish, insects, fruit, flowers, trees and native peoples, frequently combining plants, animals and landscape backgrounds on the same plate.

Guerin-Meneville identified certain species of beetles that are named after him. His historically important collectors cabinet of Crustacea (a class of arthropods) is now in the collection of the Invertebrates Department at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.
