These unusual natural history still lifes by an unknown artist combine shells, feathers and seaweed into flowing compositions of curves and arabesques. The style suggests a transition from a Victorian approach to still life to the curvilinear stylizations of early Art Nouveau. The translucency of watercolor is skillfully employed to suggest the smooth, opalescent sheen of the shells, and the graceful, spidery lines of the seaweed create an effective contrast.
