Natural history print of two tortoises. Testudo mauritanica was once thought to be a separate species, but recent scientists feel that it is the same as Testudo graeca, a species found in Algeria. Cistudo is a genera of land tortoises. It comes from a French natural history dictionary, a set of prints in the spirit of the 19th century collector's cabinets in their wide-ranging investigations of natural phenomena and interest in exotic or unusual species, and including 286 fine illustrations of animals in series including reptiles, birds, mollusks (shells), insects, crustaceans, etc.
Charles Dessalines d' Orbigny was from a family of scientists, including his brother Alcides, a prominent zoologist. He authored works on geology, botany and zoology.
