Bird's-eye Civil War view of Washington, D. C., focusing on Soldier's Rest and showing cheering soldiers outside the barracks, welcoming a train used for troop transport. The Capitol building appears in the background with the dome completed, although in 1864 it was still under scaffolding. Other buildings are also included in the view.

Charles Magnus was one of the largest publishers of Civil War topographical prints and city views, as well as pictorial envelopes with Civil War camp scenes, patriotic song sheets and illustrated poems. The firm's main operation was at 12 Frankfort Street in New York, with a branch office at 520 Seventh Street in Washington, D.C.
