Astronomy prints showing the surface of the moon, a circumpolar view of the constellations of the Northern sky, and an illustration of the changes in seasons as the earth revolves around the sun. From the German edition of Iconographic Encyclopaedia of Science, Literature, and Art, also published in New York, in the mid 19th century.

First published in 1851, Heck's encyclopedia was based on Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus's Bilderatlas, one of the finest encyclopedias of its day. Educated people in the 19th century aspired to the ideal of the "Renaissance man," a well-educated person acquainted with all areas of culture, history and science. Heck conceived his encyclopedia in that spirit, compiling detailed engravings on every aspect of human inquiry.
