Johannes Bayer's star atlas Uranometria contained a few innovations. It was the first atlas to
use Greek letters to mark individual stars, a system still in use today. This system marks the brightest star with the letter alpha, the second brightest with beta, and so on. It was also the first
atlas to show twelve new southern hemisphere constellations that had recently been discovered
by Europeans.
