Souvenir clock in the form of a frying pan, the flat back with gold painted hours numerals, gold hours and minutes hand, and central circular, color-transfer, single hemispheric map of North and South America. Each continent is in the form and image of a draped woman and titled: PAN-AMERICAN EXPOSITION * 1901 * BUFFALO U.S.A. The backside of the pan is fitted with one-day balance wheel movement clockworks, held by three bolts, winding like an alarm clock, probably made in Connecticut.
This interesting whimsical novelty clock was produced by C.P. Chouffer, a jeweler in Buffalo, New York, having the maker's name imprinted on the back of the panhandle. Apparently the pan form of the clock was intended as a pun on the name "Pan American."
Nearly 8 million people attended the Pan-American Exposition, which was held in Buffalo, New York, from May 1 to November 2, 1901. In addition to a midway with rides and entertainment and athletic events, the fair featured the latest technologies, including electricity. There were also cultural exhibits.
