Hand-carved portrait bust of Goethe (1749-1832), German poet, novelist, playwright, philosopher and scientist, the greatest figure of the German Romantic period and one of the giants of world literature. From 1775, Goethe held positions at the court of Charles Augustus, Duke of Saxe-Weimar, including chief minister of state for 10 years, and director of the state theater and the scientific institutions. At the same time he produced a steady stream of plays, poems and other literary works. His best known work is the dramatic poem Faust, the first part of which was published in 1808; the second part was published posthumously.
