American country dictionary stand, adjustable in angle with ratchet mechanism in the back. A relative simple design and execution, probably for a schoolhouse. The bookstand has nice age, evidenced by the wear, and by the shrinkage of the main board with the grain, relative to the battens on either side. The battens are mounted against grain, and hence now are slightly longer, not having shrunk.
