One of the most influential bookbinders of his time, Zaehnsdorf was considered to be an excellent craftsman with impeccable taste. Books that he bound found their way into the libraries of all of the great English book collectors of his era.

Born in Budapest, he apprenticed to a bookbinder in Stuttgart and worked elsewhere in Europe before arriving in London in 1837. There he was employed by established firms for a few years, before starting his own bookbinding company. This venture succeeded, and was taken over by his son, Joseph William Zaehnsdorf (1853-1930) after his death.
