This comprehensive guide to antique European ceramics is organized alphabetically as a dictionary (and enclopedia) of markers and terms of art, accompanied by line illustrations and illustrations of makers' marks. There are also color photographic illustrations.

Honey was the Keeper of the Department of Ceramics at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. According to the preface, he intended the book to be a "comprehensive guide to most of the historical and aesthetic aspects of post-medieval ceramic art in Europe." The attractive full green leather binding features a gilt griffin figure on front cover and gilt decoration on spine. The combination of fine binding and useful content makes it an excellent addition to the ceramics collector's library.
