Collected poetical works of Chaucer, with commentary by Thomas Tyrwhitt, an English scholar noted for his studies of Shakespeare and his edition of the Canterbury Tales, which was originally published in five volumes in 1775-78. Leather binding by James Hayday (1804-76), a London binder who is first mentioned in directories in 1825, known for his highly original and innovative bindings.
The binding has raised bands, gilt lettering and designs in spine compartments, the covers with central rolled-tool gilt frames with decorative outer edges. Inside is an engraved frontis portrait and extra title, and double-column text.
