In the Spirit of the Hamptons
Book by Kelly Killoren-Bensimon
New York: Assouline Publishing, 2002

A unique custom-made pictorial map of the Hamptons, hand-painted in an antique style by map artist Donna Walker. Walker’s Map of the Hamptons, commissioned by the George Glazer Gallery, was featured on a two-page spread in In the Spirit of the Hamptons, a pictorial history and contemporary review of the Long Island beach resort towns by Kelly Killoren-Bensimon (New York: Assouline Publishing, 2002). The geographically accurate map of Eastern Long Island, incorporating a large portion of Suffolk County, is based on current cartography.

In the lower border are six vignette views of historic sites and structures in the Hamptons, number-keyed to the map: Peconic Bay, Shinnecock Hills Golf Course, South Hampton Historical Museum, Maidstone Arms, Hook’s Mill and the Montauk Point Lighthouse. Other features include a decorative border, cartouche, compass rose and a sailboat and whimsical whale in the ocean.

Donna Walker is an American painter working in oils and watercolors.  She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1994 and her Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan in 2000.  Her oil paintings are principally landscape views of picturesque scenes from her travels.  A longtime interest in antique maps and in combining art, travel and history has also led her to create her own watercolor pictorial maps.
