The 18-inch globe in calibrated full metal meridian, the horizon with engraved paper calendar and zodiac, raised on a mahogany Duncan Phyfe style stand with turned and reeded central standard, on four downswept reeded legs each with carved waterleaf decoration, ending in brass animal paw casters.

This globe was manufactured for A.J. Nystrom, a major school supply house in America in the 20th century.  It incorporates globe gores by the famous and prolific British globe maker, W. & A.K. Johnston.  The stand was likely provided by Kittinger, one of the leading American furniture makers of the 20th century (based on similar examples with a Kittinger cartouche rather than Nystrom).  As such, the stand is unusually high quality for a floor globe of this period and probably was intended for home use.  See our Guide to Globe Makers for more information about W. & A.K. Johnston, A.J. Nystrom and Kittinger.

W. & A.K. Johnston was among the most important figures in the production of globes in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. For more about Johnston globes see our Guide to Globe Makers reference section.
