Pair of large poster prints from a set of educational botanical wall charts, one of a plantain (banana) tree and the other of a sago palm. Each shows the tree drawn to scale with details of the plant parts, which are labeled in a key at the bottom. Grossblättriger Sagobaum is shown one-twentieth natural size and Gemeine Banane is shown one-eighth natural size. Along the sides are pointing hands with exhortations (in German) to "See the detailed text!”
Such large wall posters were commonly used in the instruction of botany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Zippel, a botanist, and Bollmann, an illustrator, produced three series of charts, part one featuring native plants and parts two and three exotic botanicals. The examples offered here are from part two, which originally consisted of 24 plates. Other examples of posters from this series are located in the Dutch KB (Royal Library), a Czech University collection and at Harvard University.
Inscriptions along the sides: "Siehe den ausführlichen Text! Die Abbildungen, welche nicht besprochen werden, sind zu verhängen!"
